Rad Hourani is a utopian. Rad Hourani is a romantic. Rad Hourani is aminimalist master. The clothing he designs, and the universe he inhabits, is about gender-obscura where hard-edged rigour lives and futurism reigns. The creator of all things unisex, Mr. Hourani dazzled the audience with an AW12 collection filled with versatile, intellectual garments that fetishised androgyny and celebrated a sort of goth spirit meets tenebrous militarism. His collection, simply called ‘#5′, invoked a kind of dystopian futurism. There were his formulaic minimalist silhouettes this time coming in dark green tones with straight leggings and slender trousers, sculpted wool overcoats with robust lapels, box-y leather backpacks and architectural skirts (for men and women) cut asymmetrically. There was also evidence of Oriental enchantment with Kimono-like accentuations on the sleeves and backs of garments. Hourani, who hails from Canada and has presided over his label for 5+ years now, executes compelling and consistent concepts, which are directional in nature, highly inventive and represent seriously avant-garde achievement. His AW12 collection was no different. Bravo!
