"My monotype works depict a symbolic nature and underworld, with plants and figures that replay archetypal patterns of death and rebirth. Images of the natural world figure prominently in my work to convey personal and general kinds of allegories of metaphysical states. Originating in but also departing from my painting practice, these tonal black monotype prints in contrast to colourful paintings imaginatively set my images back in time, as though they belong in silent cinema or black and white photography. The forms are modelled by the moonlight I create, implied by tonal shifts between light and dark ink to depict narratives that are both oneiric and potentially real all at once. The impression of light is created through the process of removing layers of ink to reveal the ground surface. This process of layering and revealing light separates and blurs the boundaries of the forms, allowing me to investigate and uncover my fascination with in-between states of perception.”
