Fiona Nguyen's pictorial work is formed in the coalescence of the past and present. She creates ensembles of oil paintings to escape into meandering visual concepts; where the different avenues, aesthetic directions and previously ignored alleys finally come together in psychologically provocative scenographies. Her recent paintings borrow visual language from distillations of love in popular culture. She observes the coded systems of romance through the history of Western art, cinema, music and fashion. As an interrogation, she de-paralyzes the common signifiers of romantic grammar, calling into question the fixation of these popular symbols. It is in this reflection that the artist displaces the signifiers and references from their historical, philosophical, sociological, religious, or artistic contexts, towards perspectives of migratory experiences. Nguyen initiates instead a transcultural understanding of “Love”.
