Holly MacKinnon paintings combine figures and elements of landscape to create dreamlike environments and spaces which are a constant pull between joy and despair, lightness and darkness. Many of these images imply a narrative, some even featuring recurring characters, while others seem to capture an interaction or
emotion in a quick snapshot. Through the depiction of people and places, the artist explores the complexities of the human experience such as emotional health, the connection to others, as well as to our decaying environment. In the current climate, the artist believes that the relationship to nature is one that is becoming more important and increasingly sinister, and within these untouched landscapes, figures roam openly, touch flowers, interact with nature – a sort of utopia (or dystopia) where people are free to emote and react freely to their environment.
