“I went through the eye to understand how it functions, how it processes light, darkness, how it perceives form, distance and propinquity. I wanted to capture things with my eye without identifying what was in front of me, as humans need to identify things or categorize people. To capture things around me without necessarily defining what those shapes were or what these colors could be related to, what city, what country.”
As soon as light hits the retina, the tangible world starts to map itself in our brains, and we start to associate pre-conceived ideas to these images reflected within us. In “EYE”, Rad Hourani imagines a vague world devoid of any clear imagery that could be associated with any conditioned man-made notion.
Rad Hourani offers the viewer a blank slate made out of architectural constructive images of daily life, captured worldwide. These images are decontextualized and assembled in a collage of moments, adjacent to keywords associated with visual process. In this way, the viewer is confronted by realities that they can perceive without labelling.
