Nuances in colour have been made to project undertones of suggestion, sensitive both to society and time. Transmitted from one generation to another, stemming either positive or negative connotations, a plethora of different meanings are possible.
Due to themes within a society, prior association, or simply personal preference, a colour may evoke one reaction from one person, and an entirely opposite reaction in another. Compounded by societal peculiarities, a hue perceived as uplifting in one country, might evoke feelings of depression in another.
For instance, Asian customs and traditions celebrate the colour red, for it symbolizes notes of luck and joy. In contrast, western societies mark it to represent martyrs and sacrifice, in its resemblance to human blood, along with love and passion. As for the scientific world denoting it to associations of physicality and injury, a majority of persons appreciate the colour for it being popularly associated with acts of courage, loyalty, honour, success and fertility.
In the “RED” installation at the "IMAGINE BRAZIL" exhibition, Rad Hourani chose the colour red for its rich history within societal customs, principally in regards to the juxtaposition in significance to that of a traditionally-sensitive Asian point of view versus that of a scientific anatomical perspective. The photographical series illustrates different perceptions of bodily forms, among an Asian based casting, in contrasting frames with works of art by artist Adriana Varejão, Jonathas de Andrade and Adriano Costa.
